Albert Memorial

Albert Memorial
Queen Victoria was desolate when her beloved husband Prince Albert died in 1861 aged only 41, and she commissioned Sir George Gilbert Scott to design this monument in a High Victorian Gothic style, richly decorated with allegorical symbols. The sculptures on the sides of the base depict Europe, America, Asia and Africa, while those on the corners symbolise various kinds of industry. The prince himself is depicted seated, holding a catalogue of the 1851 Great Exhibition with which he was closely associated. The Memorial was recently restored and can now be seen in its original splendour.
